During a visit to The Hague, you shouldn’t miss the Binnenhof. It is one of the most significant historical and political locations in the Netherlands. The Binnenhof is the oldest parliamentary building in the world still in use today. The complex beautifully illustrates the evolution of Dutch politics and architecture throughout the centuries.
Under renovation until 2030
It's important to know that the Binnenhof is undergoing extensive restoration and renovation until 2030. This project will cost approximately 2 billion euros—far exceeding initial estimates, as the condition of the 800-year-old monument turned out to be worse than anticipated.
Observation Tower
To still enjoy this beautiful complex during renovations, a yellow observation tower has been constructed near the entrance. Admission is free. From the top of the tower, you can admire The Hague's skyline and look across the roofs of the Binnenhof onto the construction site at the center. The tower provides concise explanations about various buildings and towers.
Note: the tower may sway during strong winds.
Political Heart
The Binnenhof forms the heart of Dutch politics. It's a complex of buildings surrounding a central courtyard in The Hague's city center. Dating back to the 13th century, it originally served as the residence of the count and gradually evolved into the political center of the Dutch Republic and later the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Ridderzaal (Knights' Hall)
The beautiful medieval hall with impressive Gothic architecture was built around 1280. This is where the Dutch king, Willem-Alexander, delivers the annual speech ("Troonrede") on Prinsjesdag.
Het Torentje ("The Little Tower")
Standing along the Hofvijver pond and looking toward the long side of the complex, you can spot the small tower ("Het Torentje") on the left. This tower is the office of the Dutch Prime Minister. Next to it is the famous Mauritshuis museum.
First and Second Chambers
The Eerste Kamer (Senate) and Tweede Kamer (House of Representatives) together form the Dutch parliament ("Staten-Generaal"). They represent the highest legislative authority in the Kingdom. During renovations, these chambers are temporarily housed elsewhere.
