The Beach
Scheveningen boasts one of the most popular beaches in the Netherlands—a wide stretch of sand extending for kilometers along the North Sea. The beach is well-maintained and features the iconic Scheveningen Pier, defiantly jutting into the waves. During summer, numerous beach clubs offer food, drinks, and sun loungers. The boulevard running alongside is perfect for a pleasant (evening) stroll.
The Harbor
Scheveningen Harbor combines a working fishing port with recreational facilities. You can watch fishing boats returning with their catch and enjoy fresh seafood at numerous restaurants by the marina, filled with countless yachts.
The harbor area has been revitalized through modern developments while preserving its maritime charm, making it one of the most desirable residential locations in the Netherlands. Compared to the busier boulevard along the northern beach, the harbor offers a more authentic atmosphere. The southern beach (Zuiderstrand) is especially popular among locals and surfers. Beach clubs here are more peaceful and relaxed than those on the north side.
History of the Fishing Village
Scheveningen began as a modest fishing village in the early 13th century. Fishing was the primary livelihood for centuries, with flat-bottomed boats launched directly from the beach. In the 19th century, it evolved into a seaside resort after Jacob Pronk opened the first bathhouse in 1818, attracting wealthy visitors seeking therapeutic sea bathing.
The distinct culture of Scheveningen’s fishing community set it apart from The Hague, featuring its own dialect and traditions. Traditional costumes of Scheveningen fisherwomen, with their iconic headwear, became legendary. A statue called "De Scheveningse Vissersvrouw" (The Scheveningen Fisherwoman) stands on the boulevard. Although formally annexed by The Hague in 1886, the village has retained much of its unique identity.
